Every person is entitled to living within sanitary conditions, as it is an essential component of our most basic human rights. Unfortunately, the current waste treatment systems in Lobitos are failing to serve the sanitation needs of the residents. The town is constantly combatting issues of contamination from malfunctioning systems and even resorting to open defecation for lack of any properly operating alternatives. With careful consideration and a mission to fulfill, our team proposes the implementation of a Latrine Network with Constructed Wetlands. Sanitation is a foundational necessity for a community’s growth and development. Therefore, we have developed a system which addresses the vast number of issues and offers a strong, reliable infrastructure. Every household that is currently without a sanitation system will receive an outdoor latrine equipped with a privacy small building, a squatting pan, and an underground waste tank. This tank will enable: biosolids to process for use as fertilizer; bioliquids to be diverted to constructed wetlands for an array environmental benefits; biogas to be captured and utilized as a fuel resource for household purposes (stove, heat, etc.). But that is not all! The complete design also proposes: upcycling the currently abandoned oxidation ponds as the constructed wetlands which will create a lush habitat for wildlife and plants; creating several jobs through the formation of a dedicated Sanitation Maintenance Department; and cleaning up the waste pools that have invaded the beautiful community. Sanitation is not just important, it is essential for ensuring the health and safety of the residents, the community, and the environment. So, please join us… Let’s Sanitize Lobitos!
